Is any action or human behavior, activity, etc. irreversible?
Is there anything that cannot be changed, forgiven, taken back. Obviously there are things that friends and even married couples say in moments of anger, weakness, that are harsh enough that the one hurt by it may forgive but it will not be forgotten. That is why when disagreements begin to be hot and when calm logic flees the scene, it is also time for both parties to separate until both have had the opportunity to evaluate the issue in relation to an eternal perspective and the possible consequences to their relationship if they continued the way they were. It has been said with some degree of academic support, that nothing is ever totally forgotten.
That everything ever heard and seen can be brought back to mind when the right spark is lit to remind. Forgotten, no, not really. That may be one of the few things in this life that is truly irreversible, the memory of man. We are given to understand that at judgment time everything ever said and everything ever done, even everything that we ever thought will come to our remembrance. Alma instructs thus; “…can you imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance of all your wickedness…” (Alma 5:18)
Yes! Not forgotten! But forgiven is another side of the coin. In this thought I will only say that in time, all things contrary to God’s will may be forgiven. The word ‘Forever,’ in man’s mind, may be a few years but from God’s perspective forever is eternal and we, as humans have very little capacity to comprehend that.
In the Plan of Eternal Progression, as we progress our values will change and the things we may have done along the way will seem embarrassing to us and we will repent. I can almost guarantee it, the question is, will our progress be inhibited until we do? Yes! Retarded progress will be the price we pay if we do not repent or ‘turn around’ while on earth and even in an eternal realm. Yes, I do believe that there is repentance beyond the grave.
There are many things that are irreversible from a mortal point of view, the following story is one such experience.
Story of a Blind Girl
There was a blind girl who hated herself just because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world, she would marry her boyfriend.
One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see every- thing , including her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asked her, “Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?” The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was a blind person, and refused to marry a blind person. Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and
later wrote a letter to her saying: “Just take care of my eyes dear.”
This is how some human brains change when their status changes. Many remember what life was before, and who’s always been there for them but a few forget, even the most painful situations.
I rather doubt that the boyfriend could ever get her to give him his eyes back—if they could even withstand a reversal operation. Yes, there are things that we can’t take back, things irreversible from a practical point of view and some from a technical view. From an eternal point of view I have a feeling that, because of a loving God and the eternal nature of man that there is a point that we will all come to a realization of our true nature and contrary behavior and be embarrassed, even ashamed of previous behaviors and at that repentant moment our progress will commence. Knowing full well that those we love may be much further along the progressive road of eternity. The eternal road to perfection.
