“If you believe in Jesus Christ, you will believe in the Book of Mormon.” That was a statement on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website. The assumption is true, because the Book of Mormon has more references to Jesus Christ than does the Bible. Growing up I had some religious training and attended church once in a while but not regularly. I had enough religion to make me know that religious people had something that I did not. I think the best description of who I was and what I knew about Christianity could be summed up this way: I knew of Him, Jesus Christ, but I was not very well acquainted with Him. While in the army, I was a 20 year old military policeman, stationed at the presidio in San Francisco. A Mormon assigned to my squad room introduced me to the Book of Mormon. I had asked him why he was so different than the rest of us; he never swore, smoked nor did he ever drink alcohol. He told me that he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint Church and that they believe that those things are harmful to a person’s health. He then opened his footlocker and handed me a Book of Mormon and said that if I would read the book that I would understand what it was that made him different. The next week or so he was assigned to Korea and I was assigned to an eight week radio school at Fort Lewis, Washington. I arrived at Fort Lewis a few days before the training began. At my first opportunity and out of curiosity I picked up the Book of Mormon and started to read it. For the first time in my life, I felt something that I had never felt before. The spirit of the Book of Mormon was so powerful for me, at that time, that I had a hard time putting it down. Tears were streaming down my cheeks without my even knowing why. After radio school started I could hardly wait for class to end each day so that I could get back to the barracks to continue my reading in the Book of Mormon. I started this article with the statement that “If you believe in Jesus Christ, you will believe in the Book of Mormon.” Even if you do not believe for sure in Jesus Christ, you will believe in the Book of Mormon. Too, If you believe the Book of Mormon after having read it, you will believe in Jesus Christ. I could hardly wait to return to the Presidio in San Francisco. There I would be able to find the church that Mormons went to and to see if I could attend. I was so naive that I thought the name of their church was the Mormon Church. I looked for the address in the phone book and there was none. I found a friend of my Mormon friend who had given me the book and he said that it was ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints’. The next Sunday I went to the church and asked if it was alright if I attended. They were excited to have me and had me attend the investigator class. After a few weeks I was baptized by another Mormon who was also stationed at the Presidio in an engineering company. I was a young man who had never really had much faith, but who was led to a belief in God and Jesus Christ in just a very short period of time, maybe, even a miraculous process. After 65 years as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints my faith has grown much stronger. After young people recognize that something new has been introduced, they often quip, “Game Changer”. Reading the Book of Mormon was for me a game changer, even a life changer.
