On All Labor is Honorable

Posted on December 5, 2019August 5, 2022 by Emil Hanson

Young children are often asked what they want to be when they grow up? Their answers are usually some vocation that they are acquainted with such as a fireman, a policeman or they may say they want to be what their father or mother does. I believe that most people end up doing what they are hired to do, in other words, where they can find a job. We don’t always have the luxury to choose what work we do or where we are fortunate to find a job. When we are out of work we look for a job to keep bread on the table and pay the bills. Wherever there is an opening at the time we are looking and if we qualify, we are hired. Many people are too timid or unsure of their qualifications to attempt to look for another better paying or more demanding position. Fortunate are those who have the means to attend college or some specialized training program. Some people may be fortunate to qualify for financial assistance in order to attend a college, university or formal job training program. Those who can train and become proficient in a specific vocation will usually end up doing what they elected to be trained to do. There are so many variables that determine where and what a person ends up doing for a living such as: where they live, who they know, who their parents know, what their parents do for a living, what personal and mental skills they were born with or have developed in their personalities- whether subdued or outgoing, etc. What each of us does for a living may have very little or no relationship to whether or not we are happy with our lives. People may perform work that they have very little interest or enjoyment in but because of a series of circumstances, they are there. Others are fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time and were hired to do something that they enjoy doing and have made it a career, “The luck of the draw”. Whatever a person ends up doing by design or by chance it can be honorable.
