Long ago, my dad started writing his autobiography as a traditional birth-to-present depiction. Around the time he was collecting his thoughts for that project, I had an idea for a project that would preserve not only the chronology of the events of one’s life but one’s perspective on various topics. I felt that that was a more complete way of recording a life as, almost even more than events and relationships, our perspective, experience, and wisdom are the fruits of life (especially of lives well-lived like my parents’). I asked members of my family to try writing these “perspectives”, but only my dad took the challenge. And he really did—four volumes-worth! It has become yet another autobiography, but this time of his perspectives. It’s made up of many individual articles on anything he happened to think of and feel that he should write about at the moment. Through his perspectives, we get a detailed description of him—a man who has lived a life rich in experience and wisdom. We, his children, will publish as many of his articles as time allows, hopefully eventually publishing the complete collection. (this post was updated after the death of our dad in August 2019)
